London, Aug 27 (PTI) English actor Sophie Turner, best known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in HBO's "Game of Thrones", has spoken out about the show's controversial marital rape scene.

In an interview with Flaunt Magazine, Turner discussed the scene from the "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken" episode of the fifth season, in which Sansa is assaulted by her husband Ramsay Bolton.

At 19 when the episode aired, Turner believes it addressed a crucial issue. "I felt—and still feel—that Game of Thrones brought attention to subjects many found too sensitive to depict. While it can indeed be triggering, I understand that perspective. Nonetheless, I felt we were doing justice to women and highlighting the battles they've faced for centuries—the patriarchy, objectification, and incessant sexual assault. I don't think there's a single woman I know who hasn't experienced some form of that," she stated.

The 29-year-old actress, who began her role on this epic saga at just 13, faced a similar situation in earlier seasons.

"When younger, there was a scene in season one or two where Sansa narrowly escapes rape. I didn’t fully grasp it then... I was trying to make sense of it as a child," Turner added.

If the show were released today, Turner believes it would require trigger warnings. "If Game of Thrones came out today, we'd definitely include trigger warnings... However, I'm proud to have been part of a series that didn’t shy away from depicting the hardships women faced historically. I feel proud to have participated in that conversation," she said.

Moving forward, Turner is determined to tackle vital subjects in her work.

“I enjoy creating content that compels people to reflect and possibly instigate change... I aim to pursue more unconventional stories, seeking projects like those from A24 that are unique and niche," Turner explained.

The talented actor will soon appear in the upcoming British Gothic horror film "The Dreadful" as well as the Prime Video series "Steal".
