Mumbai, Aug 8 (PTI) Filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya, known for his traditional takes on marriage in films, is venturing into a fresh narrative with his upcoming TV show, "Manpasand Ki Shaadi." The series promises a modern twist on the institution of marriage and is produced by Barjatya’s renowned Rajshri Productions banner.

The storyline centers around a character named Aarohi Shinde, portrayed by Esha Suryawanshi, who challenges her family’s conventional views by choosing to select her life partner. "Manpasand Ki Shaadi" delves into the conflict between generational traditions and evolving modern values, highlighting the complexities of familial and societal expectations. The male lead is played by actor Akshun Mahajan.

In an interview with PTI, Barjatya shared, “My films typically start with an arranged marriage. However, this time, we’re presenting a scenario where a father encourages his daughter to independently select her partner. It's the most contemporary subject we've tackled.”

He continued, “This is challenging for us but also necessary in today’s society. We want to showcase evolved dynamics in father-daughter and mother-daughter relationships. The love story within the show is mature, marked by its own set of challenges.”

Barjatya, celebrated for iconic films like “Hum Aapke Hain Koun”, “Hum Saath Saath Hain”, and “Uunchai”, revealed that the idea behind this show has been on his mind for some time.

“Marriage is a pertinent and often debated topic right now. The values that we upheld for decades seem quite different today. I got married at 21, but young people now often marry at 27 or 29, including my own children. Observing this shift, I felt compelled to create a story reflecting this evolution and share my insights with society,” he explained.

While Barjatya admires the current generation’s open-mindedness, he stresses the importance of honoring the institution of marriage.

“Today's youth are non-judgmental, irrespective of wealth, caste, or creed. They value professionalism and have specific personal preferences. Whereas previously, emphasis was on superficial attributes, now personality and shared values take precedence. It’s crucial, however, to respect both society and marriage,” he remarked.

Barjatya disclosed that his films and now the TV series, “Manpasand Ki Shaadi”, are deeply inspired by his life experiences.

“I crafted films like ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’ from personal life events, such as the passing of my mother, illustrating the essential nature of family. Similarly, ‘Manpasand Ki Shaadi’ stemmed from thoughts on modern-day marriage,” he said, adding his excitement about exploring a Maharashtrian backdrop in this show for the first time.

“Manpasand Ki Shaadi”, featuring a talented cast including Milind Gawli, Suchitra Bandekar, Avinash Wadhwan, and Gungun Uprari, is set to premiere on August 11 on Colors TV channel and JioHotstar.
