Los Angeles, Aug 28 (PTI) Hollywood star Pedro Pascal is currently in talks to join the cast of director Todd Haynes' upcoming same-sex drama, "De Noche".

This development comes a year after the sudden exit of Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, which led to the project's cancellation.

If negotiations are successful, Pascal will star alongside Danny Ramirez in the film, as reported by Variety.

In the movie, the two actors will portray a corrupt cop and his younger lover as they escape 1930s Los Angeles and head to Mexico.

Last year, Phoenix withdrew from the project just five days before filming was to start in Guadalajara.

A source close to the production revealed that the "Joker" actor got "cold feet" concerning the film, for which he had co-developed the screenplay with Haynes and Jon Raymond.

The film was anticipated to receive an NC-17 rating due to explicit sex scenes.

During his press tour for the 2023 Netflix film "May December", Haynes mentioned to IndieWire that Phoenix was instrumental in initiating the project.

"The whole experience was prompted by Joaquin.

It was prompted by his daring, his desire to push through barriers and to really get into the uncomfortable places about this relationship.

And yet it felt like a very organic process," the filmmaker commented.

"De Noche" will be produced by Killer Films and supported by sales agent M2K Film.

Pascal had a busy year, earning a second Emmy nomination for his role in the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us”.

He also starred in three major titles: Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, A24’s “Materialists”, and Ari Aster’s “Eddington”.

Pascal is set to reprise his role as Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday” and will return as the Mandalorian in the upcoming "Star Wars" film "The Mandalorian and Grogu”.
