Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5 (PTI) Noted Malayalam film and television actor Shanawas passed away at a private hospital here following prolonged health issues late Monday night.

The 71-year-old actor, son of the legendary actor Prem Nazir, had been grappling with serious ailments for an extended period and was admitted to the hospital after his condition worsened, family sources confirmed.

Shanawas began his illustrious acting career with the Balachandra Menon-directed film "Premageethangal."

Over the years, he featured in more than 50 Malayalam films and appeared in several television serials.

Among his notable films are "Mazhanilavu," "Neelagiri," "Manithali," "Gaanam," "Aazhi," and "Human," among others.

Following a hiatus, Shanawas returned to the spotlight with the Mohanlal-starrer "China Town."

His most recent appearance was in Prithviraj's 2022 blockbuster movie "Janaganamana."

Condolences have poured in from various quarters, including from General Education Minister V Sivankutty, who expressed grief over the actor's demise.
