New Delhi, July 22 (PTI): In a remarkable acknowledgment of his contribution to cinema, acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been honored as the 'Asian Filmmaker of the Year' by the prestigious Busan International Film Festival.
The award recognizes an Asian film persona or organization that has significantly contributed to enhancing the Asian film industry and cultural landscape.
Jafar Panahi, celebrated for his groundbreaking films such as "The White Balloon," "Offside," "The Circle," and "3 Faces," remains a luminary of international cinema. Yet, he has endured a fraught relationship with the Iranian authorities. Sustaining all odds, Panahi has persevered in his craft—creating "This Is Not a Film" within the confines of his home under house arrest, or "Taxi," shot entirely in a car, showcasing his indomitable spirit.
BIFF remarked, "As a towering figure in Iranian cinema, Panahi has consistently explored themes of existence and freedom against the backdrop of censorship and political oppression. He bravely encapsulates Iranian society's political and social dynamics from a countercultural viewpoint, presenting his works at international film festivals despite facing arrests, custody, travel restrictions, and an imposed ban on filmmaking."
Panahi expressed his sentiments, "In times where creating films in my nation becomes increasingly challenging, this recognition reiterates that cinema continues to bridge us across borders, languages, and limitations. I accept this award not only for myself but for all those artists who, amidst silence, exile, or pressure, persist in their creative endeavors."
This year, Panahi's "It Was Just an Accident" secured the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival. His illustrious career boasts accolades such as the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for "The Circle" in 2002 and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival for "Taxi" in 2015.
Among his distinguished accomplishments are the Locarno Golden Leopard for "The Mirror" in 1997 and the Cannes screenplay prize for "3 Faces" in 2018.
Panahi is set to receive his award during the opening ceremony of the Busan International Film Festival on September 17. The festival will continue till September 26.
