Ryan Gosling has criticised The Academy’s Oscar 2024 nominations, expressing disappointment over Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's snubs for ‘Barbie’.

He has been nominated for Best Actor and America Ferrera for Best Supporting Actress, but Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig have been left out of the running for Best Actress and Best Director, respectively. Surprisingly, the fantasy comedy has earned a nomination for Best Film.

In his lengthy statement addressing the snub, Ryan, who portrayed Ken, emphasized the significance of ‘Barbie’ in his career, highlighting that without Barbie, there is no Ken.

He started his statement by expressing gratitude for the nomination and pride in playing a role as unique as a plastic doll named Ken.

‘But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,’ Ryan said, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

‘Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,’ he added.

The actor concluded his statement by saying, ‘Having said that. I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.’

The Academy announced that Annette Bening (Nyad), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Carey Mulligan (Maestro) and Emma Stone (Poor Things) have been nominated for the Best Actress. Meanwhile, Justine Triet (Anatomy of a Fall), Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest) have been nominated for Best Director.
