Kolkata, July 25 (PTI): Acclaimed Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska's new film, 'Mother', draws inspiration from the life of Mother Teresa and was partially filmed in Kolkata. This cinematic work is set for its premiere at the esteemed 82nd International Venice Film Festival. 'Mother', Mitevska's seventh feature film, stars Swedish actress Noomi Rapace as Mother Teresa, who posthumously achieved sainthood. The annual festival will run from August 27 to September 6. Set against the backdrop of 1948, 'Mother' delves into Mother Teresa's life shortly after World War II and prior to the founding of her Missionaries of Charity congregation. A significant portion of the film was shot in Kolkata, scheduled for 2024, featuring landmarks such as Howrah Bridge, Kumartuli, Kalighat, Entally, and Loreto Convent, where Mother Teresa once taught. Co-producer Prateek Bagi highlighted the local support the crew received during filming. Comprising an international team, the project brought together producers Sebastien Delloye for Entre Chien et Loup (Belgium), Sisters and Brother Mitevski (Macedonia), Vuk Mitevski, Labina Mitevska, Rainy Days (Sweden), Frau Film (Denmark), and Raging Film (India). Another significant contributor was SRFTI alumnus Shaunak Sur, co-founder of Raging Films. 'Mother' is set to open the Orizzonti section on the first competition day of Venice's film festival. The Orizzonti section celebrates works that introduce innovative aesthetics and expressive techniques in contemporary cinematography. This is the third time Mitevska's films have featured in Venice's official lineup. The producers shared that Mitevska's interest in Mother Teresa's story originated from personal ties, as both were born in Skopje, North Macedonia. The project evolved from an initial documentary, 'Theresa and Me', after Mitevska's first visit to Kolkata in 2010-11 led to uncovering more compelling facets of Mother Teresa's life. The Orizzonti section is dedicated to spotlighting emerging and innovative global cinema trends, featuring both established stars and promising directors.
