Los Angeles, Aug 13 (PTI) Hollywood studio Focus Features has unveiled the first glimpse of Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis in the forthcoming film "Anemone". This project marks his highly anticipated return to cinema after an eight-year hiatus. Day-Lewis, renowned for his transformative acting prowess, holds the distinctive honor of securing the Academy Award for Best Actor on three occasions: for his portrayal in Jim Sheridan's biographical drama "My Left Foot", Paul Thomas Anderson's opulent period drama "There Will Be Blood", and Steven Spielberg's historical epic "Lincoln".

"Anemone" is characterized as a family drama that explores the unraveling of lives due to the seemingly insurmountable legacies of political and personal turmoil. This film serves as the directorial debut of Ronan Day-Lewis, Daniel's son, who co-authored the screenplay alongside his father.

Scheduled for its world premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival, the film boasts an ensemble cast including Sean Bean and Samantha Morton in significant roles. Focus Features promoted the film on its social media with the post: "Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis returns to the screen with ANEMONE, directed by Ronan Day-Lewis. Also starring Sean Bean and Samantha Morton. Premiering at this year’s New York Film Festival. #NYFF63"

Set against the backdrop of Northern England, the narrative follows a middle-aged man, portrayed by Sean Bean, who embarks on a journey from his suburban life into the woods. There, he reconnects with his estranged brother, a reclusive figure portrayed by Day-Lewis. The film delves into their complex and intricate past, depicting a relationship marred by yet occasionally tender connections, irrevocably changed by seismic events from their past.

Having bid farewell to acting after his role in the 2017 film "Phantom Thread" directed by Anderson, Day-Lewis had publicly declared his withdrawal from the occupation. The 68-year-old actor expressed gratitude in a statement, saying, "Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject."

In a prior interview with W magazine, Day-Lewis discussed his retirement, explaining, "I didn’t want to get sucked back into another project. All my life, I’ve mouthed off about how I should stop acting, and I don’t know why it was different this time, but the impulse to quit took root in me, and that became a compulsion. It was something I had to do."

At the New York Film Festival, "Anemone" will be featured under the Spotlight section. The festival is slated to run from September 26 to October 13.
