Independence day 2022: Real life heroes on Silver Screen

We as Indians take great pride in saying that there's a fighter in every one of us. On India’s 75th Independence Day,

let’s take a look at some incredible movies based on real-life heroes.

Neerja (2016)

This biopic is based on braveheart Neerja Bhanot. The head purser had sacrificed her life to save the 359 passengers of Pan Am Flight 73 which was hijacked by terrorists. Sonam Kapoor starred in the titular role.

Mary Kom (2014)

The biographical sports drama, starring Priyanka Chopra, is based on the life of the legendary boxer Mary Kom. The film highlights how a poor rice farmer’s daughter pursues a career as a boxer despite her father's disapproval and battles the demands of a male-dominated society.

Major (2022)

Centered around the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the film focuses on the life of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was deployed at the Taj Hotel to rescue hostages held by the Pakistan-backed terrorists. He was killed in the attacks and was consequently awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award for his bravery, in 2009.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013)

The film is based on Milka Singh, fondly remembered as The Flying Sikh. It chronicles his extraordinary struggle – from being an orphan to becoming one of the nation’s greatest athletes.

Kesari (2019)

Starring Akshay Kumar and Pareenti Chopra, the film is based on an incredible true story of the 1897 Battle of Saragarhi. It shows how Havildar Ishar Singh, a soldier in the British Army, led 21 Sikh soldiers in a fight against 10,000 Afghans.
