A court in Andheri has sentenced filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to three months imprisonment in connection with a cheque bounce case. Judicial Magistrate (First Class) YP Pujari delivered the verdict on Tuesday under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The court has also directed Varma to pay Rs 3,72,219 as compensation to the complainant within three months. However, since Varma was not present during the proceedings, a standing non-bailable arrest warrant was issued for the execution of the sentence as per the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
The case stems from a complaint filed in 2018 against Varma's firm. Varma was previously granted bail in April 2022 with a cash security of Rs 5,000. Further details of the court’s order are awaited.
