Mumbai, Sep 5 (PTI) Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has announced that his upcoming film "Nishaanchi" takes a fresh direction compared to his renowned crime saga "Gangs of Wasseypur." While "Wasseypur," released in 2012, drew inspiration from stories heard by the filmmaker, "Nishaanchi" is deeply rooted in his personal experiences and upbringing in Kanpur and Lucknow.
The trailer of "Nishaanchi" was unveiled earlier this week, sparking conversations on social media with inevitable comparisons to "Gangs of Wasseypur." The latter gained popularity for its raw depiction of gang rivalries that spanned multiple generations. "Nishaanchi" explores the intertwined lives of twin brothers Babloo and Dabloo against the backdrop of the Hindi heartland, featuring debutant Aaishvary Thackray in a dual role alongside Vedika Pinto, Monika Panwar, Kumud Mishra, and Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub. However, Kashyap has dismissed the parallels drawn between the two films.
“During the making of 'Wasseypur,' I was inspired by the storytelling styles of Mehboob Khan and K Asif. The unexpected buzz around 'Wasseypur' turned it into a cult classic. Wherever I went, fans clamored for 'Wasseypur 3!' However, 'Wasseypur' is not representative of all of North India. 'Nishaanchi' is as distinct from 'Wasseypur' as the 840 kilometers separating Kanpur from Lucknow,” Kashyap explained in a statement.
Known for critically acclaimed films like "Black Friday," "Dev D," "Gulaal," and "Mukkabaaz," Kashyap emphasized that "Nishaanchi" is a project that originated from within him. “The film comes from the world I grew up in: Kanpur and Lucknow. Unlike 'Wasseypur,' which was a story heard secondhand, 'Nishaanchi' captures my own memories, humor, quirks, language, and music—all inherent to me. It is fictional but thrives on the zest of the language, the spirit of the people, and the unique attitude of the region.”
Backed by Jar Pictures in partnership with Flip Films, "Nishaanchi" was penned by Kashyap, Prasoon Mishra, and Ranjan Chandel. Produced by Ajay Rai and Ranjan Singh, the film is slated for a nationwide release on September 19.
