Guwahati, Jul 30 (PTI) - In a shocking turn of events, Nandini Kashyap, the lead actress from the recent Assamese box office sensation 'Rudra', was arrested early Wednesday in connection to a hit-and-run incident that tragically claimed the life of a 21-year-old man, as reported by the police.

According to Guwahati Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic), Jayanta Sarathi Borah, the arrest occurred around 1.30 am after Kashyap was detained on Tuesday.

"We have produced her in court and are seeking a five-day police remand. We are currently awaiting the court's decision," Borah stated.

The incident transpired in the Dakkhingaon area during the early hours last Friday when an SUV, allegedly driven by Kashyap, collided with a two-wheeler, explained Borah.

Samiul Haque, the young man on the two-wheeler, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for urgent treatment. Subsequently, he was transferred to Apollo Hospital for advanced care, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.

Borah indicated that the initial FIR did not mention the actress's name, and she was summoned for questioning the day after the accident.

"Initially, the sections applied were bailable. However, with the unfortunate demise of the victim, we have now added non-bailable sections and proceeded with her arrest," Borah elaborated.

When questioned about the delay in taking action, Borah stated that the traffic branch was unaware of the accident initially.

CCTV footage of the accident unveiled that Haque, a student at Nalbari Polytechnic Institute, was run over by the swiftly moving SUV.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the actress did not stop to assist the victim and instead fled the scene.

Friends of Haque, who was on his way home after working on streetlight repairs for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), pursued the SUV to an apartment complex in Kahilipara and confronted Kashyap.

Borah further disclosed that Kashyap's vehicle had previous penalizations for speeding, with numerous challans issued across different districts. Meanwhile, forensic experts have been summoned to examine both vehicles, with a preliminary survey already conducted and a detailed report anticipated within the coming seven days.

Tragically, Haque, who hailed from a less affluent background, was balancing his educational expenses by working part-time with the GMC.
