English football authorities have demanded an investigation after their players were targeted with alleged racist abuse during a World Cup qualifier against Hungary in Budapest on Thursday.

Pitchside reporters for domestic broadcasters said they heard some Hungary supporters aiming monkey chants at England players Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham, who are Black.

England's players were jeered for taking a knee, pelted with plastic cups after goals and then targeted with alleged racist chants. England won the game 4-0, with Sterling among the scorers. The English Football Association said that it would ask world football's governing body, FIFA, to investigate.

England coach Gareth Southgate said that if the reports were true, it would be "completely unacceptable".
