The presiding officer of a polling station in Assam’s Karimganj Lok Sabha constituency was suspended after a video showed a polling agent voting for a BJP candidate five consecutive times.
According to the Indian Express, the district election officer in an order said that the video was recorded during a mock poll before the actual voting on April 26 in the constituency.
The order said it was the duty of the presiding officer to ensure that no one carried mobile phones to the polling booth, yet the video in question was recorded using a mobile phone.
“As per procedure, polling agents are allowed to cast a few votes in favour of the candidate during a mock poll. Statements of other polling agents are underway and polling officials have been served show cause notice in this regard,” the DEO statement said.
The viral video showed Abdul Sahid, a polling agent for Independent candidate Abdul Hameed, pressing the button for BJP MP Kripanath Mallah five times.
