In a setback to Congress ahead of Lok Sabha elections, Vijender Singh, India's first Olympic medallist in boxing joined BJP on April 3.

Singh had fought the 2019 Lok Sabha election unsuccessfully from the South Delhi constituency as a Congress candidate.

Singh comes from the Jat community, which has political influence in a large number of seats in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Apart from his boxing career, Singh has also tried his hand at acting, having appeared in movies and TV shows.
