Novak Djokovic's bid for the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men's tennis since 1969 ended one victory short, as Daniil Medvedev stun him 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the US Open final on Sunday.
Medvedev’s surprisingly one-sided triumph in 2 hours and 17 minutes gave him his first major championship and prevented Djokovic from winning what would have been a record 21st Grand Slam title of his career. The Serbian was far from his best, making 38 unforced errors in all, but Medvedev was inspired, firing down 16 aces.
Top seed and world number 1 Djokovic, entered this match with a 27-0 record in 2021 at the sport's four most important tournaments and had beaten Medvedev in the Australian Open final in February, before adding titles on clay at the French Open in June and Wimbledon on grass in July. However, the 34 year-old couldn't get to 28-0.
