Former Indian boxer Dingko Singh passed away at the age of 42 on Thursday after battling a prolonged illness. Singh who won Gold at the 1998 Asian Games was suffering from liver cancer since 2017. The Padma Shree awardee had also tested positive for Covid-19 last year but had recovered soundly.
Manipur CM Biren Singh Tweeted to pay his reverence to one of India's ace boxers. Calling him the most outstanding boxers Manipur ever produced, the CM tweeted, 'Shocked and deeply saddened by Shri N Dingko Singh's demise'
Dingko rose to fame after he ended India's 16-year long wait for an Asian Games victory. Dingko won gold in the bantamweight division in 1998 in Bangkok. Dingko was also conferred the Arjuna Award in 1998 and the Padma Shri in 2013.
