Kite flying is synonymous with Independence Day. For many people, especially across north India, Independence Day celebrations are not complete without heading to the rooftop and having 'kite wars' with the hundreds of colourful kites taking to the sky.
But what is the story behind flying kites on the 15th of August every year? Quite logically, kites symbolise freedom, as they fly high in the sky, indicating joy and celebration. But the tradition goes way beyond being just a celebration to mark the historic day.

It is believed that in 1927, kites became a symbol of protest against the British Raj when people flew kites with the slogan 'Simon Go Back', against the Simon Commission. Ever since, the practice continues till date with different themes and messages printed on these kites, from 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' to Bollywood celebrities, Indian politicians and cartoon characters.
While Independence Day celebrations are on a smaller scale this year owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, you can always head to the terrace and fly a kite or two to keep the spirit of celebration alive.
