Crime data published by by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows that despite the lockdown last year crime rates have dipped marginally but rate of 'riots' have almost doubled.
According to the latest data communal riots registered an increase of 96% in 2020, caste riots saw an increase of close to 50%, agrarian riots 38% and riots during ‘andolan/morcha’ increased by 33% vs the previous year.
As per the data released 2020 saw 857 cases of communal riots being registered across the country a with the Delhi Police alone registering 520 cases of communal riots in the year due to the Northeast Delhi riots of February last year.
Cases of caste conflict however, were highest in Bihar followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
As per the NCRB data India recorded an average of 80 murder and 77 rape cases everyday in 2020.The country witnessed a total of 29,193 fatalities with Uttar Pradesh accounting for maximum murders with 3779 such cases
