In a fresh sign that the Covid-19 threat in India has reduced considerably, the government has reportedly decided to stop the mandatory caller tune related to the pandemic. News agency ANI quoted sources to report that the caller tune will soon not be heard when calls are made.
The news was met with relief on social media, eliciting humourous responses on Twitter. The caller tune forced people to wait till the audio message concluded before the call was connected.
The caller tune was introduced in 2020, soon after the pandemic hit India in earnest. The awareness message on the audio clip kept changing according to the situation - from asking people to wear masks and maintain distance, to get the vaccine on time. The caller tune also featured voices of celebrities like actor Amitabh Bachchan.
