Sitting at home during the lockdown, many used dating apps to virtually meet potential matches, but this 20-year-old girl along with her friends decided to use dating apps to actually reach out and help those in need.
The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic crippled the health infrastructure system of the country, and in these trying times, it has been difficult to get blood donors too. Moreover, matters got further complicated as many were recovering from the infection or who just got vaccinated. To help hospitals and patients source blood for emergency operations, Riya Gupta along with a group of Chennai-based medical students decided to help connect patients with blood donors.
Their initiative, a blood donation drive called the Blood Donor Connect, has helped arrange blood for several people through social media platforms, including popular dating apps Tinder and Bumble. The team has a set database which is being constantly developed and they make over 500 calls a day to cross-check and verify the sources, the requests and donors.
Within a week of launching the blood donation drive, the team managed to find over a hundred donors.
