Renowned Italian chef Massimo Bottura has been appointed by the United Nations Environment Programme as its newest Goodwill Ambassador, to spread awareness about the problem of food loss and wastage.

The news was announced on the occasion of the first ever International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. Amid the Covid-19 lockdown, Bottura and his family produced an online cooking show called 'Kitchen Quarantine', encouraging people to see the potential in every ingredient.

The UN estimates that nearly 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost or wasted each year. The Italian chef has also founded a non profit called Food For Soul, the aim of which is to promote social awareness on wastage of food and hunger.
