In a setback to the Trinamool government, the Calcutta High Court on Thursday handed overt the West Bengal post-poll violence probe to the CBI. The HC directed that a special investigation team must be set up to probe the allegations and that the probe will be monitored by the court.
The Kolkata Police Commissioner, Soumen Mitra, will be part of that special team, the court said.
The BJP had alleged attacks on its workers after the Trinamool's sweeping victory. The party had alleged that TMC workers attacked women members, killed workers, vandalised houses and looted shops and party offices.
The Trinamool had rejected the BJP allegations, calling them "greatly exaggerated".
A National Human Rights Commission team that probed the post-poll violence submitted its final report to Calcutta High Court. The 50-page report termed the situation in the state a manifestation of the law of the ruler instead of the rule of law.
The TMC called the NHRC report politically motivated.
