The price of a vegetarian thali in India rose by 34% in July as compared to June, showed a CRISIL report. As per the report, 25% of the rise in thali price is attributed to the tomato price surge. A veg thali comprises of roti, vegetables (onion, tomato, and potato), rice, dal, curd, and salad.
Tomato prices rose 233% to Rs 110 per kilogram in July from Rs 33 per kilogram in June. However, it is not just tomato prices that contributed to the price hike. As per CRISIL, onion price rose 16% and Potato 9%. Similarly chilli and cumin also saw a sequential rise of 69% and 16% respectively.
"The prices of onion and potato increased 16 per cent and 9 per cent month-on-month, respectively, contributing further to the increase in cost," said CRISIL.

Meanwhile, the price of a non-veg thali also went up but by a smaller 13% month-on-month. The cost of broilers declined 3% to 5% in July, thus making the cost of non-veg thalis to grow at a slower pace.
CRISIL calculates the average cost of preparing a thali at home based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east, and west India. The monthly change reflects the impact on the common person's expenditure. The data also reveals the ingredients, including cereals, pulses, broilers, vegetables, spices, edible oil, and cooking gas, driving changes in the cost of a thali.
