A declining rainfall pattern is severely affecting water security in Bihar, the state which does not have enough storage capacity, according to a study by the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI).

Bihar has only 950 million cubic metres of storage capacity in its 22 dams, which covers just 5% of the state's requirement.

This could have major consequences for the mostly rain-fed agriculture practiced here.

With the increasing population in the state, the per capita availability of water is reducing.

On World Water Day,  celebrated on the 22nd of March, experts are urging the Bihar government to safeguard existing water resources to preserve them for future generations.
