Under the motto "together we shine" the historic centre of Berlin was lit up on Friday evening with installations on monuments and historical buildings throughout the city.
The 16th Festival of Lights has turned it into an open air light gallery.
It will spread throughout the city over the next week, illuminating different neighbourhoods and hopefully bringing some joy during the coronavirus pandemic as well as spread the message of gratitude and solidarity in these difficult times.
