From improving digestion to being a great source of vitamin C, we're no strangers to the benefits of juicy beetroots. While you may have heard many of these, new research has found that drinking beetroot juice can also result in healthy ageing.
The study, published in the Redox Biology journal, showed that the consumption of beetroot juice helps produce a set of mouth bacteria that are associated with healthier brain function and blood vessels.
Beetroots and other foods including lettuce, spinach, and celery are rich in a certain compound that helps regulate the growth of a healthy oral bacteria that tends to diminish with age in older people.
The results of the study associated higher levels of bacteria with good vascular and cognitive health and lower levels of bacteria were linked to disease and inflammation.
