A rare earthquake rattled southeastern Australia early on Wednesday. The tremors left buildings shaking, knocked down walls and sent panicked residents running into the streets of Melbourne.
The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 5.8, later revised up to 5.9.
Media showed images of damage to some building, but there were no reports of any serious injury. Debris littered roads in the popular shopping area around Melbourne's Chapel Street, with bricks, apparently coming loose from buildings.
Sizable earthquakes are unusual in Australia's populated southeast.
The earthquake was the largest to rattle Australia since a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck 210 kilometers off the northwest coastal town of Broome in 2019.
