Apple has released the iOS 14.8 and macOS 11.6 updates for its operating systems that fix a system weakness exploited by the Pegasus spyware.

Researchers at Citizen Lab in Canada identified the issue while analysing a Saudi activist’s phone, who had been targeted by the spyware.

The ‘zero-click’ exploit would let a hacker gain complete access to a target’s phone without any actions on the user’s part. Apple said it had rapidly developed the update after the discovery of the issue.

Earlier this year, an international media investigation found that several governments across the globe used the Pegasus spyware, created by NSO Group based in Israel, to spy on activists, journalists, and politicians.
