Over the past few days, heartbreaking images and videos have been coming out of Afghanistan where the Taliban has now seized power. Celebrities worldwide have also stepped up, to highlight the plight of women and children in the war-torn country.
Now Hollywood superstar and UN Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has joined the chorus.
Angelina, who keeps her personal life fiercely private, joined Instagram on Friday to draw attention to the voices of women and children in Afghanistan.
She shared a heartbreaking letter that she received from a teenage girl in Afghanistan.
In the caption for her post, Angelina said, the people of Afghanistan are losing their ability to communicate on social media and to express themselves freely, so she has come on Instagram to share their stories.
In the letter that Jolie shared, the girl — whose name, location and other details are blurred out — writes that after the Taliban took over “we are all afraid of them, and we think all our dreams are gone. We think our rights have been violated.”
Angelina's Instagram following shot up to more than 3.8 million in a few hours after she made her debut on the social media platform.
Her account currently follows just three others: the NAACP, Doctor’s Without Borders and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
Her Instagram bio reads: “Mom, filmmaker, Special Envoy for UN @refugees.”
Angelina wrote, “It is sickening to watch Afghans being displaced yet again out of the fear and uncertainty that has gripped their country,”.
She went on to say, “Like others who are committed, I will not turn away. I will continue to look for ways to help. And I hope you’ll join me.”
Angelina Jolie represented UNHCR as a Goodwill Ambassador from 2001-2012. She has worked tirelessly, carrying out nearly 60 field missions and becoming an influential advocate on refugee and displacement matters.
After years of dedicated service to the cause of refugees, Angelina was appointed Special Envoy in April 2012.
Angelina Jolie will next be seen in Marvel film 'Eternals', which will release worldwide in November this year. For 'Eternals', she joins an ensemble cast of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harrington among others.
