Researchers from the Delhi-based Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology have developed a new method of Covid-19 test that they say is faster, cheaper and almost as accurate as the RT-PCR test. This new method does away with the need for a biosafety lab, which makes it possible for it to be used at airports and railway stations to test passengers before they board a plane or a train. The simple swab test, the researchers say, is almost 100% accurate, and takes about 30 minutes from sample collection to delivering a result, compared to five to six hours for the RT-PCR test. And it costs just 100 rupees per test, which can go down further if done at a mass level.
