At 11:58 pm, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya tweeted to confirm the "historic" figure.

Prime Minister Modi also took to Twitter to declare that "every Indian would be proud of Friday's record vaccination numbers". He also thanked healthcare and frontline workers who had worked hard to make the vaccination drive a success.

The government had set out a target of 2.5 crore vaccinations and crossed the mark before the end of the day.

The government said India has crossed Europe in the total number of vaccine doses administered so far.

On Friday, it said, 17 lakh doses were administered per hour, 28,000 doses per minute and 466 doses per second.

With this India broke China's record for most inoculations in a day. China had inoculated 2.47 crore people in June. Now India holds the world record for most Covid jabs in a day.

The World Health Organization's South-East Asia office also tweeted its congratulations.
