UN Security Council to vote on Gaza ceasefire after blocking 'humanitarian ceasefire'

Days after the rejection of "humanitarian ceasefire" by US, UNSC will vote on Monday on a resolution proposing an end to hostilities in Gaza.

UN Security Council to vote on Gaza ceasefire after blocking 'humanitarian ceasefire'

The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on Monday on a new resolution advocating for an "urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities" in Gaza.

This move follows the recent rejection by the US of a Security Council resolution proposing a "humanitarian ceasefire" in the war-torn Palestinian territory.

Arab countries, buoyed by the overwhelming support for a ceasefire in the UN General Assembly, have introduced the forthcoming Security Council resolution. The draft, crafted by the United Arab Emirates, emphasises the need for a prompt and lasting halt to hostilities to facilitate safe humanitarian access in the Gaza Strip.

Notably, the resolution does not explicitly mention Hamas, a move criticised by Israel and the US. However, it does call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages while condemning all indiscriminate attacks against civilians.

Additionally, it expresses backing for a two-state solution in the region and underscores the importance of unifying the Gaza Strip with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

The Security Council has faced international criticism for passing only one resolution on Gaza since the conflict began on October 7. Five other resolutions, including two vetoed by the US, were rejected.

Ongoing negotiations on the new text aim to avoid another impasse. US President Joe Biden has previously cautioned that Israel's indiscriminate bombing of Gaza jeopardises its international support.
