'My tragedy lives inside me': no reason to celebrate New Year for families in Gaza

Displaced Palestinians in a makeshift refugee camp in Gaza wish to be able to return to their homes in the New Year after 12 weeks of a brutal war between Hamas and Israel.

Huddled around a fire, the al-Zeinaty family said they cannot find any good reason to celebrate the New Year.

“From the intensity of the pain we live, we do not feel that there is a new year,” said Kamal al-Zeinaty, who has lost multiple family members in the conflict. “All the days are the same.”

The family now find themselves in Muwasi, a small slice of mostly under-developed land along Gaza’s Mediterranean coast designated by Israel as a safe zone.

The al-Zeinaty family are originally from Jabalia Refugee Camp, one of the epicenters of the current conflict.

Zeyad al- Zeinaty, another member of the extended family sitting around the fire, said he is too consumed by the pain of the past year to look forward to the New Year.

His wife and brother are among many family members he has lost to the current conflict, he said.

“My three grandchildren have been under the rubble for more than ten days,” he said.

“How do you want me to celebrate 2023?”

More than 21,800 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israeli fire and airstrikes since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out, the Hamas-run Health Ministry say.

The war erupted on October 7 when militants linked with Hamas, and other armed Palestinian groups, stormed southern Israel and killed 1, 200 people, mostly Israelis, and abducted 240 others.
