Thimphu, Nov 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Bhutan’s former King, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, on Wednesday and acknowledged his significant contributions in strengthening the relationship between India and Bhutan over the years.

"Had a wonderful meeting with His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, appreciating his extensive efforts in further cementing India-Bhutan ties," Modi shared through social media.

The discussions during their meeting highlighted key areas of cooperation including energy, trade, technology, and connectivity.

Modi expressed satisfaction with the "Gelephu Mindfulness City Project" which aligns with India's Act East Policy.

He extended his gratitude to "His Majesty for his wise counsel and guidance in enhancing the special India-Bhutan friendship," according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Prime Minister conveyed the best wishes from the government and people of India for the former king’s continued good health, well-being, and longevity, as noted by the ministry.

While on his two-day visit to the Himalayan kingdom, Modi also spoke at an event on Tuesday at Changlimethang Stadium to honor the 70th birth anniversary of Bhutan's fourth ‘Druk Gyalpo’ Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

Modi highlighted the deep spiritual and cultural bonds shared by India and Bhutan which have lasted for centuries, emphasizing his commitment to taking part in the "important occasion".

During his address, Modi praised the fourth king's transformative leadership, noting Bhutan's emergence as a "modern nation-state" and as a constitutional democratic monarchy.

Under His Majesty's guidance, Bhutan introduced the unique concept of gross national happiness, marrying economic growth with sustainability, Modi remarked.

Referring to the fourth king, Modi described him as a blend of wisdom, simplicity, courage, and selfless national service.

Further commending His Majesty's decisive role, Modi acknowledged the establishment of democratic systems and the promotion of peace in border areas.

Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Punatsangchhu-II project alongside King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck following comprehensive discussions.

Modi reiterated that the progress and prosperity of India and Bhutan are deeply intertwined, with a focus on enhancing connectivity.
