Tragic Migrant Van Crash Near Burgas, Bulgaria Kills Six

Sofia, Bulgaria – In a tragic incident near the Black Sea city of Burgas, six migrants lost their lives in a vehicle crash, while three others and their driver sustained injuries. The accident was reported by a senior official from the interior ministry on Friday.

The crash unfolded late Thursday night, as law enforcement attempted to halt a van with Romanian registration plates. The vehicle was carrying nine migrants who had illicitly crossed into the country, according to Anton Zlatanov, chief of border police.

Zlatanov explained that despite police signals to stop, the driver persistently refused to comply and tried to avoid spike strips deployed by the authorities. The evasion led to a crash, resulting in the tragic fatalities. First aid was provided at the crash site to the surviving three migrants and the Romanian driver. Initial reports indicate that the migrants hailed from Afghanistan.

Bulgaria, situated as a gateway from the Middle East and Afghanistan to Europe, is a common transit route for migrants. While the EU's poorest member state experiences significant migrant traffic, few opt to settle in the country, using it predominantly as a passageway to the West.

In the last two years, authorities have dismantled up to 20 organized criminal groups engaged in human trafficking, according to Zlatanov. “Zero migration is not possible due to global dynamics. Nonetheless, we have successfully reduced migration pressure by approximately 70% compared to the previous year,” he stated.
