Maldives' main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party will reportedly file an impeachment motion against President Mohamed Muizzu, a day after a ruckus ensued at the parliament.

An MDP MP told local news outlet Sun.mv on Monday afternoon that the MDP, which wields a significant majority in the parliament, has collected enough signatures needed to initiate a no-confidence motion against the pro-China president.

It comes a day after the pro-government parliamentarians clashed with the MDP MPs during a special session convened to seek parliamentary approval for Muizzu's cabinet ministers.

A clash ensued between MPs from the ruling alliance of the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) clashed with the MDP, after four of the 18 members of President Muizzu’s Cabinet didn't get approval ahead of the voting on the Cabinet.

The decision of the opposition MDP and The Democrats' parliamentary group not to approve some members of President Muizzu's Cabinet, has led to the ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives and People’s National Congress (PPM/PNC) coalition affiliated parliamentarians to disrupt parliament proceedings and enter the chambers of the Speaker.

In December, the parliament's government oversight committee approved the cabinet, declaring that all members met constitutional requirements, as reported by Sun Online.

A video viral on social media shows MPs gathered near the speaker’s chair and engaged in a physical altercation.
