Tragic Building Collapse in Egypt After Fire: 8 Dead, 29 Injured

Cairo, Sep 26 (AP) – In Egypt's Nile Delta, a portion of a building gave way after a fire erupted in the early hours of Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals and injuries to 29 others, officials reported.

An electrical short circuit is believed to have caused a boiler explosion, sparking a fire on the second floor of a dye business located in El-Mahalla city.

This city, situated in Gharbia province, is renowned for its textile manufacturing industry.

The resulting structural damage led to the building's partial collapse, as confirmed in a statement by the governor's media office.

Governor Ashraf al-Gendy, upon visiting the affected site, stated that emergency response teams have successfully contained the blaze and cleared debris from the building.

However, rescue operations continue as efforts are made to extricate three individuals still trapped beneath the rubble, their current conditions remain uncertain.

The labor ministry issued a notice indicating that some civil defense personnel lost their lives while battling the fire.

Among the injured, one person is in intensive care, eight remain hospitalized, while the rest have been treated and discharged, as per the governor's office.

Previously, in July, a fire in downtown Cairo consumed the main building of a telecom company, injuring at least 14 people and causing a temporary interruption to internet and mobile phone services.
