Samsung launches Bespoke AI, a new generation of smart appliances like microwave and washing machine

Samsung has launched its next phase in groundbreaking innovation, Bespoke AI, and showcased the products soon to be available for purchase in India. This includes Bespoke AI-powered refrigerator, washing machine, microwave, and air conditioner. Details here!

Samsung launches Bespoke AI, a new generation of smart appliances like microwave and washing machine

Samsung announced the launch of Bespoke AI on April 3, 2023 at the Samsung BKC store in Mumbai. JB Park, President and CEO of Samsung Southwest Asia described Bespoke AI as the “next big innovation in home appliances which will ensure smarter living for Indian homes and reduce energy consumption, contributing to a greener planet.”

They present a platform featuring a series of home appliances powered and connected by Bespoke AI. Samsung's Bespoke appliances in India include the French Door Refrigerator, a new Air Conditioner, Microwave and Washing Machine.

What is Bespoke AI?

Samsung R&D Bangalore’s Dipesh Shah described Bespoke AI as a “state of art AI plus connected SmartThings platform of Samsung”. He explains how “Bespoke AI is moving from product specific AI to platform specific AI, connected not at the device level, but at the smartphone level”.

“Do Less, Live More” is at the core of the innovation of Bespoke AI, said Shah. He further explained how Samsung addresses three main agendas with Bespoke AI. The first is convenience where the appliances are aimed at offering a better, more suitable lifestyle to its users.

Shah informs that Samsung has conducted in-depth research and studied Indian households to recognise problems related to operation of electronic appliances, and provided solutions in the form of the different functions of the appliances.

The second agenda is "homecare" where Samsung essentially promotes self-repairing.
Energy efficiency and regulatory consumption has also been addressed by Samsung with Bespoke AI. To promote greener practices, Samsung is also promoting sustainability with rewards on the basis of the device's carbon stamps.

“With AI appliances, our objective is to further strengthen our premium portfolio and increase our share in the premium appliances segment,” added Saurabh Baishakhia, Senior Director, Digital Appliances, Samsung India.

Moving on, here are more details of the Bespoke AI powered appliances launched.

Bespoke AI Convertible French Door Refrigerator

The French Door Refrigerator comes with an AI vision camera, which recognises the different food items in the fridge. With this information, the refrigerator will not only notify users about the condition of food items, but can also make suggestions for healthy recipes that can be cooked. Being Wi-Fi enabled along with the SmartThings Application, if a user also possesses the Bespoke AI powered Microwave, the recipe can be automatically assigned to the microwave via the app. Furthermore, the Refrigerator also features a View Inside application that allows you to check what's inside the refrigerator via the SmartThings App from wherever, whenever.

Bespoke AI Microwave

The Microwave provides an array of personalized diet recipes including the likes of low fat and keto. The users will essentially be spoilt for choice with the Microwave alongside the Refrigerator when it comes to healthy recipes, saving time even in terms of shopping for food items with more being offered in terms of device care and energy efficiency.

Bespoke AI FrontLoad Washing Machine

The third appliance launched with Bespoke AI is the Front Load Washing Machine. It features AI Control that learns the laundry routines of the user over time, to offer more personalized wash cycle presets that can be further customized. This is made possible by its AI Wash feature that senses the different factors like weight of the load, fabrics and their quality, water level , soiling level and detergent level to create the custom wash presets.

Bespoke AI WindFree Split AC

Moving on, Samsung also launched an Air Conditioner with Welcome Cooling function which allows users to control the device via the SmartThings Application even from a distance. The AC AI Geo Fencing, which along with the SmartThings Application will recognise when the user is within the range of 30 kms, and prompt a notification for action. In other words, the user now has the option of just walking into a room with temperature and air conditions set to their choice, instead of having to wait, as users can turn on and turn off the Air Conditioner even when they are away from their homes.

Other Features Highlighted at the Bespoke AI showcase

As mentioned before, Samsung has actively taken upon the responsibility of promoting a greener planet with cleaner, and energy efficient practices. The Bespoke AI appliances come with AI Energy Mode, that claims to provide 10% energy savings in refrigerators, up to 20% in air conditioners and up to 30% in washing machines. Furthermore, Samsung claims that a five star rated Samsung refrigerator reduces CO2 emission by 359 kgs/year. Users can also set energy limits for the appliances according to the desired bills and appliances can be run accordingly with the AI Energy Mode along with its suggestions.

Samsung aims to create appliances that learn from users instead of being the other way round, with users learning how to operate them. To quote Shah, “These devices now talk to each other. Users don’t learn to use the devices, but the device itself learns the behavior of the consumer and acts accordingly”.

The Bixby AI Voice Assistant is a major feature in this ambition, where it has been tuned to not only take "commands" from users, but recognise them even from conversations. Samsung aims to create a system where users can simply talk to their appliances, outlining the groundbreaking development that Bespoke AI is.

Smart Forward is another feature supporting these appliances which will provide regular updates for software up to 5 years. This not only ensures longevity, but also more dated functions with assured security powered by Samsung Knox. Knox has been described by Shah as “US grade security standard” where the Knox Matrix is a blockchain built across the different platforms of Samsung. For the Bespoke AI appliances, Shah explained that “If any device gets compromised, the other devices on the platform can inform about the breach.”

Additionally, SmartThings Home Care monitors devices and provides regular updates about the health of your device, notifying you from beforehand the moment any abnormality is detected. In times where Right to Repair is being vocally demanded across the world, this innovation not only saves time in terms of eliminating to and fro between the customer and the consumers, but is also a positive step in promoting self-maintenance.

Samsung’s Bespoke AI is another step in the creation of smart homes. As people become busier and more dependent on technology, Samsung’s latest appliances keep up with the ways of the world. The Front Load Washing Machine can be purchased in the form of a Laundry Hub, that is complete with a separate drier and cabinet for shoes and clothes. Additionally, the Induction Cooktop offered along with Bespoke AI Refrigerator and Microwave, is also testament of Samsung's aim in terms of connectivity of the appliances.

When asked about Samsung’s vision for the future, Baisakhia said that “Samsung aims to have 70-80% of their products powered by AI by the end of 2025”. In other words, Samsung is surely embracing the concept of AI as the future with their latest innovation.
