FairPhone 5 launches with 10-year software support and 5 years warranty: Check price, specs and features

Fairphone has introduced its latest model, the Fairphone 5, setting a new standard in the smartphone industry with an unprecedented 10 years of software support and a 5-year warranty.

This pioneering smartphone is constructed from 70% recycled and fair materials, highlighting its credentials as a repairable and long-lasting smartphone. The company has made it remarkably simple to repair, requiring only a common Philips screwdriver. Here’s a detailed examination of its specifications, pricing, and features.

FairPhone 5 Software Support and Warranty

One of the key attributes of the Fairphone 5 is its longevity. The device comes with a 5-year warranty and is guaranteed to receive software updates until at least 2031. Beyond this, Fairphone has committed to providing an additional two years of updates, totaling a decade of software support.

The smartphone is shipped with Android 13 and the company has pledged to release a minimum of five major operating system updates. This commitment to long-term software support is made possible by the Qualcomm QCM6490 processor, a 6nm industrial-grade chipset equipped with an Adreno 642L GPU, comparable to the Snapdragon 778G and a significant improvement on the Fairphone 4’s Snapdragon 750G SoC.

FairPhone 5 Specifications

The Fairphone 5 features a 6.46-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1,224 x 2,700 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 880 nits, safeguarded by Gorilla Glass 5.

The camera configuration includes a 50MP IMX800 primary rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 50MP IMX858 ultrawide lens with autofocus, and a 50MP front camera for selfies and video calls.

Powering the device is a 4,200mAh battery that supports 30W charging. Additional features include Bluetooth 5.2, dual-SIM support (nano-SIM and eSIM), dual speakers, an IP55 rating, NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and Wi-Fi 6E.

The Fairphone 5 price for the single configuration of 8GB RAM and 256GB storage is €699 in Europe. Color options include Matte Black, Sky Blue, and a novel Transparent edition.

A Step Forward in Sustainability

The launch of the Fairphone 5 marks a significant advancement in the creation of sustainable smartphones. With its repairable design, comprehensive warranty, and extensive software support, it is a model that truly embodies the principles of sustainability and ethics.

Fairphone’s initiative in developing this eco-friendly and ethical smartphone demonstrates the potential for the smartphone industry to evolve in a more responsible and sustainable direction.
