Scientists have for the first time grown plants in lunar soil brought back to Earth by astronauts in the Apollo missions, a step towards producing food and oxygen on the Moon or during future space missions.
The researchers at the University of Florida (UF) in the US showed that plants can successfully sprout and grow in lunar soil.
Their study, published in the journal Communications Biology, also investigated how plants respond biologically to the Moon's soil, also known as lunar regolith, which is very different from soil found on Earth.
This research comes as NASA's Artemis Program plans to return humans to the Moon.
"Artemis will require a better understanding of how to grow plants in space," said Rob Ferl, one of the study's authors and a professor at UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).
"For future, longer space missions, we may use the Moon as a hub or launching pad. It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that is already there to grow plants," Ferl said.
The researchers designed a simple experiment: plant seeds in lunar soil, add water, nutrients and light, and record the results.
They only had 12 grammes -- just a few teaspoons -- of lunar soil with which to do this experiment.
On loan from NASA, this soil was collected during the Apollo 11, 12 and 17 missions to the moon.
The researchers applied three times over the course of 11 years for a chance to work with the lunar regolith.
To grow their tiny lunar garden, the researchers used thimble-sized wells in plastic plates normally used to culture cells. Each well functioned as a pot.
Once they filled each "pot" with approximately a gram of lunar soil, the scientists moistened the soil with a nutrient solution and added a few seeds from the Arabidopsis plant which is widely used in the research because its genetic code has been fully mapped.
Growing Arabidopsis in the lunar soil allowed the researchers more insight into how the soil affected the plants, down to the level of gene expression.
As points of comparison, the researchers also planted Arabidopsis in JSC-1A, a terrestrial substance that mimics real lunar soil, as well as simulated Martian soils and terrestrial soils from extreme environments.
The plants grown in these non-lunar soils were the experiment’s control group.
The researchers found that nearly all the seeds planted in the lunar soils were able to sprout.
"We were amazed. We did not predict that. That told us that the lunar soils did not interrupt the hormones and signals involved in plant germination," said Anna-Lisa Paul, one of the study's authors and a research professor of horticultural sciences in UF/IFAS.
The researchers observed differences between the plants grown in lunar soil and the control group. For example, some of the plants grown in the lunar soils were smaller, grew more slowly or were more varied in size than their counterparts.
These were all physical signs that the plants were working to cope with the chemical and structural make-up of the Moon’s soil, Paul explained.
This was further confirmed when the researchers analyzed the plants’ gene expression patterns.
"At the genetic level, the plants were pulling out the tools typically used to cope with stressors, such as salt and metals or oxidative stress, so we can infer that the plants perceive the lunar soil environment as stressful," Paul said.
"Ultimately, we would like to use the gene expression data to help address how we can ameliorate the stress responses to the level where plants -- particularly crops -- are able to grow in lunar soil with very little impact to their health," she said.
The researchers found that the plants with the most signs of stress were those grown in what lunar geologists call mature lunar soil.
These mature soils are those exposed to more cosmic wind, which alters their makeup. On the other hand, plants grown in comparatively less mature soils fared better, they added.

At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the decision was made to invest aggressively to deliver big growth in audience and revenue, and as a company we did not hit intermediate milestones that enable confidence in these goals. More recently, the global macroeconomic environment has become less favorable, the war in Ukraine has impacted our results, and may continue to do so. Many other companies have been experiencing a similar effect. And, of course, we are in the middle of an acquisition and we don’t yet know the timing of the close. Effective this week, we are pausing most hiring and backfills, except for business critical roles as determined by Staff members in partnership with their HRBPs. We will also be reviewing all extended offers to determine criticality and those that should be pulled back. We are not planning company-wide layoffs, but leaders will continue making changes to their organizations to improve efficiencies as needed. As always, performance management will continue to be a priority at this time at all levels to ensure we have the strongest teams possible.
Budgeting
We also need to pull back on non-labor costs to ensure we are being responsible and efficient. We are reducing contractor and consulting spend, travel and events, marketing, our real estate footprint, on premise and public-cloud related infrastructure spend, and other operational costs. Please continue to treat Twitter’s resources as you would your own, and manage tightly to your budgets, prioritizing what matters most.

In a movie-like heist in France's capital city Paris, some persons robbed a swanky Chanel store. One of the witnesses captured the entire crime on camera.
The video, widely shared on social media, showed 4 individuals dressed in black robbing the jewellery and watch store at Rue de la Paix, close to Place Vendome.
While three of the robbers collected the bounty, the fourth stood watch outside with an automatic rifle. The heist lasted around 10 minutes, before the thieves casually exited the store and escaped on their two-wheelers
All this as normal activity continued in the area. The incident occurred on May 5, with police yet to announce any arrests, 5 days later.

"Well, it does get to me sometimes, I mean, I'm not like, you know - I do have feelings," he said with a laugh. "I'm not an android."
But he also says he tries to "take these things with a grain of salt," especially when it comes to online trolls.
"You just can't take that too seriously, you know? So, I believe in turning the other cheek and these sorts of principles that would lead to ideally a better civil discourse," Musk said.
That intention for greater discourse propelled him to buy Twitter for $44 billion to take it private. While he could not discuss the deal for legal reasons, he did outline a mix of vague principles and technical details as he looks to make the platform "maximum fun!"
"The goal that I have should that, you know, everything come to fruition with Twitter is to have a service that is broadly, as broadly inclusive as possible, where ideally, most of America is on it and talking," Musk said.
He also reiterated there will be a new sheriff in town protecting the platform from bots, trolls, and scams.
"That's obviously diminishing the user experience. And we don't want people getting tricked and&mdash;tricked out of their money and that kind of thing. So, I'm definitely on the warpath, so if somebody is operating a bot and troll army, then I'm definitely their enemy," Musk said.

Netflix’s disappointing earnings report caused its stock price to tumble about 23% —and one person who appeared to celebrate the news is Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the world’s richest man with a net worth of over $260 billion.
Responding to Netflix over subscriber loss, Musk tweeted late Tuesday night, “The woke mind virus is making Netflix unwatchable.”

In the newest 'Twitter Tales' Elon Musk sent Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal a poop emoji after the social media executive said it would be difficult to conduct an external review to determine the percentage of spam and fake accounts on the platform.Musk was clearly unimpressed as Parag Agrawal hit back at the billionaire about the handling of bots on Twitter. Agrawal tweeted on that spam “harms the experience for real people on Twitter” and that the company is “strongly incentivized to detect and remove as much spam as we possibly can, every single day.”
