Young women smokers at greater risk of heart attack

Jun 26, 2019 15:25 IST

Women smokers, under the age of 50, may be at a greater risk of a heart attack, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. While the risk of heart attack due to smoking is high for both men and women, it was 13 times higher in the case of younger women. Researchers looked at over 3,000 cases and smoking increased the risk of STEMI in women. The vulnerability of women was greater since smoking reduces estrogen levels, known to protect against narrowing of women's arteries, according to the authors of the study.
