A new megaflash record has been set by a single flash of lightning, the World Meteorological Organisation has confirmed. It was over 700 km long and set a new distance record as it spanned from north eastern Argentina, across southern Brazil and over the Atlantic Ocean on 31st October 2018. Simply put, it was equal to the distance between Boston and Washington D.C. in the United States! Another record has also been confirmed for the longest duration of a single lightning flash, which lasted for 16.73 seconds on 4th of March 2019 over Argentina. Both records have been verified using new satellite lightning imagery technology.
