In the backdrop of massive Covid spike in Mumbai, the BMC has roped in 5-star hotels to be converted into Covid care centres. The BMC on Thursday said it has approved two five-star hotels which can be used by private hospitals to admit Covid-19 patients who are not critical. A total of 42 beds &mdash; 22 in the InterContinental hotel in Marine Drive and 20 in the Trident Hotel in Bandra Kurla Complex &mdash; will be made available, the BMC said. It added that more hotels can be used for admitting such patients in the coming days if such a need arises.

The vaccination festival from April 11-14 saw intense vaccination activity with 29,33,418 doses being given on April 11, and another 40,04,521 jabs administered the next day, the ministry said. The corresponding figure for 13th and 14th April stands at 26,46,528 and 33,13,848.
The total vaccination figures during the 'Tika Utsav' saw a jump of nearly 1.3 crore vaccine doses being administered to people of eligible groups across the country, the ministry said.
Three states administered more than 1 crore vaccinations cumulatively. These are Maharashtra (1,11,19,018), Rajasthan (1,02,15,471) and Uttar Pradesh (1,00,17,650), it said India has been scaling multiple peaks in its effort to vaccinate vulnerable sections of its population against the Covid-19 virus.
The &lsquo;Tika Utsav&rsquo; saw many Workplace Vaccination Centres (CVCs) operational across private and public work places, the ministry said.

The active caseload has now soared to over 14.7 lakh. India has been the world's worst-hit country since April 2. India kicked off its inoculation drive in mid-January and has administered more than 11.44 crore shots so far.

According to official figure on confirmed and suspected cases, the virus has killed more than 500 people in Delhi in the first 14 days of April, while it had claimed 117 lives in the entire month of March and 57 in February.
At the Nigambodh Ghat, the main cremation ground of the city, currently 22 platforms and six CNG-run furnaces are being used exclusively for cremating persons dying due to the virus. The number of cremations have gone up from 15 per day to over 30.
At the Capital's main ITO graveyard, 10-15 bodies of Covid victims are being buried daily since last week. On Wednesday, 18 burials were performed.

"Let them say they have closed all gatherings and it will apply to this (case) also. But if they say they have not closed all, then this (Markaz) will be open and everywhere social distancing will have to be followed," Justice Mukta Gupta said.
On Monday, the Centre and Delhi Police was at the receiving end of scathing remarks the Delhi High Court when they suggested that only 20 people be allowed to enter the premises for prayers at a time out of a police-verified list of 200 persons.
&ldquo;It is an open place. They don&rsquo;t have fixed devotees and no other religious place has&hellip;,&rdquo; observed Justice Mukta Gupta. &nbsp;&ldquo;A 200-people list is not acceptable; that cannot be. Nobody can give the name. No religious place be asked for the names&hellip;,&rdquo; said the court.
The court also ordered a joint team of Delhi Police and mosque officials to measure the prayer area of the mosque and inform them as to how many people can be allowed inside at a time in keeping with social distancing guidelines.&nbsp;
The court will hear the matter on April 15.

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted another academic year. After a high level meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, the government notified that CBSE board exams for Class 10th that were due to begin from May 4th, 2021 have been cancelled.
The results for the academic session will be formulated based on an objective criterion prepared by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Any student not satisfied with the assessment will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold exams.
The last academic year had a similar fate. CBSE had cancelled some exams for the 2019-2020 session for the Class 10th batch. Students who appeared for 3 or more papers were marked for the remaining exams based on the average of the marks obtained in the best performing subjects. Those who appeared for only two or less were assessed on the average of the two highest-scoring exams along with performance in internals or practicals.
Schools have been shut in 11 states due to the resurgence of the pandemic. State governments and opposition parties had been requesting the centre to reschedule the exam dates.
The Ministry of Education has emphasised that the CBSE boards have an all-India character and therefore it is essential to hold exams simultaneously throughout the country. While the Centre has postponed Board exams for Class 12th and cancelled exams for Class 10th, no guidelines have been issued for the state boards yet.&nbsp;

The Central probe agency is conducting a Preliminary Enquiry on orders of the Bombay High Court in connection with the allegations of corruption raised against him by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh.
A PTI report quoting sources said Deshmukh denied the allegations raised against him by Singh during questioning and told the officers that they were an attempt to malign the image of the state government.
It is not clear whether Deshmukh is called by the CBI for another round of questioning on Thursday.
