If the day belongs to PM Modi and Amit Shah, it belongs in no less measure to union minister Smriti Irani, who created history by defeating Rahul Gandhi in the family stronghold of Amethi. The Congress held the seat since 1980 in every election except for 1998. Rahul Gandhi represented Ameth for 3 terms since 2004. "On one side, you had a family, the other side was a group that worked as a family. I thank the party and its workers for my success," Smriti Irani said.

Modi wave has yet again swept across India and has most likely ensured that PM Narendra Modi returns with a bigger mandate than the one he got five years ago. If the trends stay until final results, the BJP will surpass its 2014 tally when it had won 282 seats on its own in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Adding the seats won by its allies, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance could win 343 seats, up from 336 in 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attributed the victory to the country and said India has won again. 

A day after steering BJP to a massive win in the Lok Sabha polls, prime minister Narendra Modi and party chief Amit Shah met party veterans L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi at their residences. Both the veterans were rested by the BJP in these polls. Amit Shah contested and won Advani's traditional seat of Gandhinagar this time. After the meet, PM tweeted that the BJP’s successes today are possible because greats like Advani spent decades building the party.

Will Rahul Gandhi resign from the post of Congress President? Reports say that after the humiliating defeat at the hands of the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls, Rahul dialled his mom and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, and offered to resign. India Today reported quoting Congress sources that Sonia asked Rahul to wait and submit his resignation at the Congress Working Committee meet scheduled to be held on Saturday to take stock of the poll loss.

The Congress party lost all the seats, barring Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli and Rahul Gandhi’s Wayanad, where Priyanka Gandhi campaigned. The Congress bucked the national trend in Punjab, winning eight of the 13 seats but among the five seats it lost include Bathinda and Gurdaspur — the two seats where she had campaigned. Priyanka campaigned in 12 seats outside UP. And the Congress lost in 11, among them Silchar in Assam, Ambala, Hisar and Rohtak in Haryana, North East Delhi and South Delhi, Ratlam and Indore in Madhya Pradesh, and Mandi in Himachal Pradesh.

The saffron splash across a swathe of northern, eastern and western India has sent BJP's voteshare soaring. With gains in new areas, the BJP voteshare nationally has risen from 31% to 38%. Of the 60.37 crore votes polled in this election, more than 22.6 crores have gone to the BJP — a 32% increase over the 17.1 crore votes it got five years ago. Not only this, BJP chief Amit Shah noted on Thursday that BJP got over 50% voteshare in 17 states across the country. In contrast, Congress has managed only a marginal improvement in its vote share from 2014 — by around 2.6% to gather 22.07%

Aftershocks of a Modi tsunami at the Centre are likely to be felt in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh. The BJP is already posturing aggressively to bring both these governments down. Shaky Cong-JDS govt headed by Kumaraswamy faces a clear and present danger with an aggressive BJP and Cong-JDS internal bickerings. Madhya Pradesh govt headed by Kamal Nath with a wafer-thin majority too faces an imminent threat with the BJP already having made its first move by dubbing the govt in minority and demanding a special assembly session.
