The Delhi High Court on Friday asked Special Commissioner Praveen Ranjan what was the 'necessity' for him to issue a letter to chiefs of teams probing the Delhi riots instructing them to take 'due care and precaution' while making arrests as the arrests of ‘some Hindu youth’ has led to a ‘degree of resentment among the Hindu community’. Ranjan defended himself by saying the July 8 order was in reciprocation of an intelligence input. The court noted that such letters of instruction are not known under the CrPC and asked Ranjan to show five such letters within two days which he or his predecessors have sent in the past. The matter is listed for further hearing on August 7th. The Special CP's order was challenged by the families of two persons killed in the riots.
