What top Iran commander's killing means for India

Jan 03, 2020 17:48 IST

The killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a US airstrike could have significant fallout on India as well. India has strong relations with both the United States and Iran, external affairs minister S Jaishankar recently visited Tehran for a meeting with his Iranian counterpart. Also, there are some 8 million Indian expatriates in West Asia, so any escalation in tension could affect New Delhi, both in terms of foreign policy and economy, particularly crude oil prices. Indian nationals in the Gulf region account for about $40 billion of the $70 billion that India receives in remittances annually, a conflict could not only affect this but also trigger a massive exodus of the expatriates.
