What is Lupus and how does it affect the Covid-19 prognosis?

As the world continues to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, doctors have urged Lupus patients to stay cautious as they are at a higher risk of catching the infection.

Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disorder that affects multiple organs of the body. The immune system, instead of protecting gets hyperactive and begins to attack the healthy tissues, leading to severe fatigue.

The symptoms can vary from mild to severe or even life-threatening. Some of the symptoms include inflammation, recurrent mouth ulcers, and skin rash. It can also cause damage to the joints, kidneys, heart, and lungs. Due to the complex nature of the symptoms, lupus is often known as the “disease of 1,000 faces”.

Lupus itself and the immune-suppressing medications can increase the risk for severe COVID-19 infections and complications, says Jeffrey R. Curtis, Chair of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) COVID-19 Vaccine Clinical Guidance Task Force. People with compromised immune systems must watch out for Covid-19 symptoms like fever, difficulty in breathing, dry cough, fatigue, and chest discomfort.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lupus patients must stay at home and avoid nonessential travel. They are also advised to take plenty of rest, stay hydrated and avoid public spaces. Regular exercise, physiotherapy, yoga, meditation, and relaxation therapies can also help you feel better.
