The Delhi Transport Department has made it mandatory for vehicle owners in the national capital to install a high-security registration plate and colour-coded stickers 

The Delhi Transport Department has made it mandatory for vehicle owners in the national capital to install a high-security registration plate and colour-coded stickers for all vehicles sold before April 2019. There are approximately 30 lakh vehicles including 16 lakh two wheelers, 12 lakh four wheelers and two lakh commercial vehicles, which are required to be affixed with HSRPs. Here's your complete lowdown.
What is HSRP? High-security registration plates or HSRP is a chromium-based hologram. This is applied by hot stamping on the number plates, both on the front and back, with laser-branding of a permanent identification number.
What are colour-coded stickers? The colour-coded or fuel stickers are meant for identifying vehicles based on their fuel type. Those vehicles, which run on petrol and CNG, will have light blue-coloured stickers, while the ones that use diesel will have orange-coloured stickers. These colour-coded stickers have details like the registration number, the registering authority, a laser-branded PIN, and the engine and chassis numbers of the vehicle.
How much will I be fined for not having HSRP? Violators in Delhi can be fined up to ₹10,000, which is compoundable to ₹5,500 under the amended MV Act. Those vehicles without these would be fined starting 15th December.
What is the advantage of getting HSRP? The main reason for this becoming mandatory is that number plates are easy to switch and be tampered with. A HSRP comes with "non -removable snap lock" and is not easy to replace, adding that this will help track stolen vehicles that are otherwise replaced with new registration plates easily.
How much does HSRP cost? The govt has not capped the price of HSRP, which means its price could differ in different states. On an average, HSRP costs between ₹400 for two-wheelers and goes up to ₹1100 for four wheelers depending on the category.
What documents do I need for HSRPs?&nbsp;
Vehicle owners will not be asked to upload any document on the official site. Keep your vehicle&rsquo;s RC (registration certificate) with you for details like registration number, registration date, chassis number and engine number. You have to log in to the site, bookmyhsrp.com; fill in details such as Vehicle Number, Chassis Number, Engine Number, Owner Name and so on. A username and password will be sent to the registered mobile number, following which you make the payment. When your HSRP is ready, you will receive a message on your registered mobile number.
