Two villages in Tamil Nadu erupted in celebrations on Wednesday evening as Kamala Devi Harris took oath as the first woman Vice President of the United States.
Harris' maternal grandparents lived in Mannargudi and Thulasenthirapuram-Painganadu villages in Tiruvarur district. The 10-km stretch between the two villages was lined with huge digital banners decorated with flowers and leaves.
Crackers were burst and sweets distributed as the villagers waited for the programme to begin. Kamala Harris, born to a Jamaican father and Indian mother, has often talked of her Indian roots and influence of her mother.
